Limnological conditions in Subglacial Lake Vostok, Antarctica
Subglacial Lake Vostok is located ,4 km beneath the surface of the East Antarctic Ice Sheet and has been isolated from the atmosphere for .15 million yr. Concerns for environmental protection have prevented direct sampling of the lake water thus far. However, an ice core has been retrieved from above the lake in which the bottom ,85 m represents lake water that has accreted (i.e., frozen) to th...
متن کاملThe hydrochemistry of Lake Vostok and the potential for life in Antarctic subglacial lakes
Our understanding of Lake Vostok, the huge subglacial lake beneath the East Antarctic Ice Sheet, has improved recently through the identification of key physical and chemical interactions between the ice sheet and the lake. The north of the lake, where the overlying ice sheet is thickest, is characterized by subglacial melting, whereas freezing of lake water occurs in the south, resulting in 3⁄...
متن کاملCirculation in Lake Vostok: A laboratory analogue study
[1] The waters of sub-glacial Lake Vostok are thought to represent a unique biological habitat that has been out of contact with the atmosphere for millions of years. Although the water circulation within the lake will determine how nutrients are redistributed and hence where life may exist, the handful of existing studies conflict regarding whether the lake is stratified or well mixed, whether...
متن کاملSource of Lake Vostok Cations Constrained with Strontium Isotopes
Lake Vostok is the largest sub-glacial lake in Antarctica. The primary source of our current knowledge regarding the geochemistry and biology of the lake comes from the analysis of refrozen lake water associated with ice core drilling. Several sources of dissolved ions and particulate matter to the lake have been proposed, including materials from the melted glacier ice, the weathering of under...
متن کاملIsolation of microbes from Lake Vostok accretion ice.
Bacteria from seven Lake Vostok accretion and two deep glacial Vostok ice core sections were characterized. The cell concentrations were low, but many of the cells were viable. From the hundreds of cultures, 18 unique bacterial rRNA gene phylotypes were determined. Lake Vostok may contain a complex microbial ecosystem.
